The power, perfume and medicinal properties of Lavender have been well documented for over 2500 years. Lavender is proudly grown on the hills and rocky slopes of Hvar. The Lavender haze and hypnotising scent are at their peak in June and July, and the island is a show of purple.

Olives trees are also an important agricultural source in Hvar. Autumnal October and early November is the harvesting time.

The abundant sun is perfect also for Hvar’s vineyards, with picturesque vineyards dotted all over the island. The Ancient Greeks and Romans were growing grapes and producing wine on the island of Hvar 300 BC. Hvar’s strong wind and sunny conditions are ideal to yield high quality grapes needed to produce Croatia’s only Grand Cru.

Agave of Hvar is quite a special species. The flower blooms only once and then withers and dies. UNESCO as a part of non-material cultural heritage protects agave lace of the Benedictine Nuns.

Hvar has a mild Mediterranean climate.

Hvar town is the principal destination. It is one of the favourite destinations on the Dalmatian riviera. A fiercely proud and determined people, who are eager and courteous to show off their “Hvar town”.

There is the imposing Spanish Fortress with the magnificent sea views, known as “Fortica”, (but the locals call it “Španjola”), and situated right in the centre of Hvar town is the oldest municipal theatre in Europe. Hvar Town has an amazing heritage and colourful history, all to discover. The Franciscan monastery or recently renovated Arsenal, a coffee in the main square of St. Stephen (The Pjaca, Dalmatia’s largest square) or just wander around and explore the narrow alleys, intriguing streets and caper covered walls and old stones houses.

“Spiza” (good food) is a part of Hvar’s tradition. Healthy fresh fish and slow cooked “Peka” (lamb, veal or octopus prepared under a baking lid) home made olive oil, fresh herbs (sage, rosemary, capers…), great local cheese, dry cured meats and locally made wine.
